Summer Fog

"17th St. Fog"
oil on panel, 2014
7.25" x 9.25" (18.415cm x 23.495cm)

Here is my painting that will be featured at
Segil Fine Art Gallery in Monrovia California for the "Home, Sweet Home" Show
(Note: As of this posting the show dates listed here on my blog are correct and have not been updated on their website).

Opening reception is Saturday, July 26th, from 5:00 - 7:00 pm.
The show opens to the public on Saturday, July 19th.

This is a gothic farmhouse style home in my neighborhood and I have had my eye on it for a while now. This show's theme was the perfect excuse to finally get around to painting it.
But rather than do a straightforward blue sky painting I decided to add the incoming coastal fog. This is a common sight along the coast in the summer and looks like this on those bright sunny days when the marine layer is stirring about.

It rolls in, partially burning off, lingers around and does a good job of suppressing the blazing summer heat, especially when there is no real breeze to help keep it cool.287

  1. Good afternoon David!
    Love this one!
Glad the show is coming and and it motivated you to paint this lovely home! Great work!
Love the addition of the fog! Great job rendering it! I think it adds so much to this house portrait! Great mystery and beauty! I can almost feel the coolness of the fog and a hint of moisture! Ahhh! Also love not putting any people in the painting! Good luck at the show David! Take care. Stay cool! (Literally and figuratively!)
(It seems when we get any ocean fog in the summer it burns off rapidly! Fall, winter, and spring, the fog tends to linger a bit in the early morning!)
    Okay! So take care again!

  2. HI Michael,
Yes, this show was the perfect excuse to finally paint the old house.
Ours will burn off too much of the time. Sometimes it just retreats back to the ocean, when the wind doesn't blow it out, and hangs out just off shore until the sun sets, then it comes back. Remember the Stephen King movie "The Fog" ? Ha Ha ha!

This painting is actually a simplified version. The house has a lot more ornamentation on it.
I would like to do another version showing all that.
I may do so in the near future.
I've just got so many other paintings I must get to.
    It's all about priorities right?
You, Your... both are right. We both love fog and coastal conditions, rain etc.

    Keep painting...
    You(r) Fog Loving Art Buddy!
