This is another version of the same painting from the previous post.
The biggest difference is the addition of the shipwreck which made it more fun. Other than that the cliff is very similar in color but the background is cool green here, cool purple and orange in the previous.
You can see how in this one there is more separation of the cliff and background, primarily through value.
This is part of the reason for doing studies.266
Hello, I'm here again. Three great paintings. The sea is alive. There is movement, the waves they do their job. I like. Very interesting observation and later painting. The ever-changing sea.

Hi Ricardo, So nice to hear from you again. Thank you, even though these were done some time ago I am working on a seascapes series for 2014 so I am looking at passed work. It is a great subject, as you say "The ever-changing sea"! And it is alive like an animal.

Okay David! Love this one! The wilder the better! So much action and movement. Love it for so many wonderful reasons! I totally agree with Ricardo!
ReplyDeleteNice!!!!

Hola Michael! Wow 3 comments from 3 seafaring/coastal artists, must be on a roll! Thank you from one ocean artist to another, east to west coast. Stay tuned I will be posting at some point, maybe smaller studies from the series and eventual the larger more resolved work. Right now I don't have a lot to post. And as well I am still doing industrial/trains/landscapes et al.

Hi David, I prefer this one with the shipwreck added - although I love the other one too. The colour of the ocean is mesmerising - so rich and luscious! I also love the wildness and drama you have created with your brush-strokes. I think you should definitely pursue this series, you really know how to deal with the ocean!
ReplyDeleteHi Wendy, I too prefer this one, the green background and the shipwreck, which made it fun.
DeleteIn fact I did another back in 2010, hit 'seascape' label to see it.
These last 3 were all done 'alla prima' (in one sitting) which I almost never do since wet into wet usually gives you a certain kind of look I don't personally go for in my work. But they were fun never-the-less and studies so I pushed right through them.
Thanks for your input and...

This is a really affective piece. The way you have the bold areas of color and value contrast, and the way the eye moves across from side to side and up through the composition is really well done. The shipwreck is really well done, with the spray adn the movement you created... wow! It's really good!
ReplyDeleteThanks Katherine,
DeleteYes, I did push the contrast, and even the color, some but as you too know sometimes it is about making or finding the right combination to make a good painting.
Since I invented the shipwreck that too was part of my study.
