Art-A-Fair Hopper Railcar Nocturne

"Hopper Railcar Nocturne"
oil on panel, 2015
5" x 7" (12.7cm x 17.78cm)

Here is another new painting currently hanging in my booth at Art-A-Fair
A simple image and composition of a lone railcar. I was looking for that stillness of night, that absolute dead calm, not even the slightest of breeze.310

  1. Very atmospheric David! You have a very original approach to your subject matter which I imagine is very well received at your booth. Would love to hear more about how it is all unfolding for you!

  2. Thanks Wendy, yes I have received a lot of positive feedback to my art and am enjoying talking with the patrons as well as all the other artists at Art-A-Fair.
I will do a post that sums up the whole fair experience at or near the close so stay tuned.
    Keep sketching...

  3. Hey Buddy! Love this one David! Love the lights and darks. Love the light on the train car emerging out of the rest of the dark painting! Of course I so love all your subject matter! Your wonderful technique reminds me of the masters' use of lights and darks. Take care David! All the best with your booth and Art A Fair! Always hoping for plenty of rain in your neck of the woods!

  4. Hey Michael, and thanks for the compliment. I do look to the masters for inspiration and lately I have been looking at the Russian masters. I never tire of the nocturne or the train as a subject matter. See them all the time so I must paint.
We have had just a touch of rain, summer monsoonal rain, so not enough to get us caught up.
    Keep painting...

  5. It's really fantastic, the atmosphere you create. I'm trying to study exactly how you achieve that sense that we can see and feel the air.

  6. Hi Katherine,
Thank you, I do enjoy the challenge of not just painting a scene but painting its light and atmosphere too.
Everything really comes down to controlling the relationships between value, chroma (hue-intensity-saturation) and often visual texture. Difficult to explain in a short comment.
    Keep painting (drawing)...
